Program Description

Do you understand the basic principles and techniques for excellent splinting? Do you need practice in splinting? This course will provide you with the terminology, indications, and practice to apply several different types of splints. NOTE: Please, wear old clothing or bring a lab jacket or apron. You will apply one splint and will have a splint applied to you. This is a messy endeavor.

Who Should Attend?  Nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, students, orthopedic technicians, emergency department technicians and other health sciences professionals wishing to acquire skills in effective splinting.

Desired Learning Outcome:  You will practice basic principles and techniques to properly apply several different types of splints.

At the conclusion of Splinting: Art of Plaster, you will be able to:

  • Review the basic principles of splinting
  • Practice applying specific types of splints
  • Discuss the proper methods of patient teaching regarding slings and crutches

Diane L. Paulson, Major (Retired Army Nurse Corps), MSN, BSN, RN

Diane joined us after retiring from the Army Nurse Corps in 2007. Her years of service have led her to a variety of clinical and management areas in healthcare. Her most notable assignments were head nurse of the emergency treatment section of 2 deployed Combat Support Hospitals (Kosovo and Kuwait).

Diane holds a Master’s in Adult Medical/Surgical Nursing with an emphasis on emergency services from Armstrong Atlantic State University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Washington. She is a certified BLS, PALS, ACLS, TNCC and ENPC instructor.

Diane has been married to her husband, Ken, for over 27 years and has adopted two stray dogs, Kady and Java. She currently enjoys working in a small rural emergency room and taking teaching assignments throughout the Northwest. Her hobbies include gardening, painting and attending craft fairs.


This educational activity will provide 4.0 contact hours (including 0.0 pharmacology hours) to learners who complete the Criteria of Successful Completion.

Acute Care Education is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Washington State Nurses Association Continuing Nursing Education Approver (A-CNE), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Registration includes:  Attendance at program, downloadable program handouts, all day coffee, tea, water, continental breakfast and snacks.  All supplies are included.  Wi-fi is available in the conference center.
