Program Description

Hemodynamics and fluids are essential to every practitioner who encounters sepsis and shock whether you are in ICU, ED, or primary care.  Foundational knowledge of how these processes work to maintain the body’s homeostasis is best practice.  This course will cover the essential theory for hemodynamics including fluid selection and management for the client requiring resuscitation and an overview of sepsis and shock.

Who Should Attend?  Registered Nurses practicing in acute care environments (PCU/ICU/CCU/ED/Med-Surg), ARNP’s and other Health Sciences Professionals wishing to acquire skills in fluids and sepsis management.

Desired Learning Outcomes:   You will practice skills in hemodynamic theory, fluid management, sepsis and shock management.   

At the conclusion of this educational activity, you will be able to:

  • Discuss the components of cellular oxygen delivery and myocardial oxygen consumption
  • Discuss preload, afterload, and contractility and the relationship to fluid management
  • Discriminate between fluid types in the treatment of client conditions.
  • Define the characteristics of the different types of shock
  • Describe treatment interventions for sepsis and the management of sepsis

Oliver Lee A. Pelayo, MSN, RN, CCRN

Oliver-Lee-Pelayo1With a specialty in pediatric critical care and a passion for advancing others clinical skills, Oliver brings more than 20 years of nursing experience to the classroom.  His expertise extends to multi-system failure, trauma injuries, cardiac surgeries, and respiratory ailments.  Oliver is faculty for the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Nursing and Staff Educator for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit where he facilitates PALS courses, mock codes, and a variety of critical care topics.  Among his many honors and recognitions, Oliver is an active Ambassador to American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).  He supports nurse colleagues in advancing their professional development through certification.  He is currently serving as Symposium Planning Committee member for AACN Greater Portland Chapter.

Accreditation

This program will award 4.0 contact hours (including 0.0 pharmacology hours), to a learner who completes the Criteria for Successful Completion.  Please see the requirements for this criteria on our website.

Acute Care Education (PA-48/Nov/20) is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Washington State Nurses Association Continuing Nursing Education Approver (A-CNE), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
