Program Description

Ever wonder what is next beyond ventilator basics? This class will refresh your knowledge of basic ventilator management, then move on to more advanced concepts. You will learn about: Noninvasive positive pressure ventilation modes with common clinical indications for using these modes; Indications and benefits of invasive modes of ventilation, including pressure control, volume control, and spontaneous ventilation modes. ABG interpretation as well as waveform capnography will be examined and demystified. The class concludes with hands-on time with lungs to see the changes of PEEP, aggressive bagging, and other ventilatory maneuvers.

Who Should Attend?  Registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, students and other health sciences professionals.

Desired Learning Outcome:  Learners will gain skills to manage advanced ventilatory care for the critically ill patient.

  • Discuss indications physiology and clinical implications for various modes of noninvasive ventilation.
  • Outline clinical indications, physiology, and patient implications of invasive ventilation modes.
  • Demonstrate ABG interpretation with expected clinical actions.
  • Differentiate capnography waveforms and relate to clinical implications and nursing actions for the ventilated patient

Karen Charlton, BSN, RN

Karen has a variety of nursing experience in her 14 years as a registered nurse – from medical surgical floors, to level one trauma intensive care unit experience, to teaching medical topics in third world countries, to flying in the friendly skies as a flight nurse. She has specialized in critical care, emergency medicine, and neurosciences. She is a Certified Emergency Nurse, Certified Flight Registered Nurse, Critical Care Registered Nurse and Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse. She is an active member of Medical Teams International: Volunteer & Disaster Response Team, Partners: Emergency Medicine Teaching and Seattle King County Disaster Team with recent missions to Kenya/Somalia, Cambodia, Nicaragua, Myanmar and Haiti as a care provider and/or an EMS educator. She currently works at Life Flight Network as a Flight Nurse in the Pacific Northwest.

Accreditation

This educational activity will provide 4.0 contact hours (including 0.0 pharmacology hours) to learners who complete the Criteria of Successful Completion.

Acute Care Education is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Washington State Nurses Association Continuing Nursing Education Approver (A-CNE), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. 

Registration includes:  Attendance at program, downloadable program handouts, all day coffee, tea, water, continental breakfast and snacks.  Wi-fi is available in the conference center.
