Program Description

This course is designed to provide participants with skills needed to conduct telephone screenings and on-site focused physical examinations.  The nurse is in a critical position to help the general population make healthy decisions about their own health status.  Physical assessment is used to establish baseline information about patients to detect health problems or risk factors that may later affect the patient’s health.  The nurse attending this course will refine their ability to listen to patient histories, begin critical thinking and sharpen their ability to distinguish normal from abnormal findings.  This course will increase confidence in the abilities to refer patients to the appropriate care providers for evaluations and treatments.

Who Should Attend?  Registered Nurses practicing in acute and primary care areas, students, and other Health Sciences Professionals wishing to acquire skills in physical assessment.

Desired Learning Outcome:  You will practice basic principles and techniques to properly complete a physical assessment.  

At the conclusion of Fundamentals of Physical Assessment Skills, you will be able to:

  • Identify the key questions of a health history.
  • Demonstrate a higher level of comfort with physical examination techniques.
  • Identify normal from abnormal on a screening examination

Melody Rasmor, EdD, RN, ARNP, FNP, COHN-S

Rasmor_MelodyMelody is a Family Nurse Practitioner and Occupational Health NP with over thirty years of experience. She is a retired USAR Lt. Col and is a Veteran of 2 War Deployments, She has been a school nurse for the Vancouver School District, the employee health nurse for the Portland VAMC, and worked as an occupational nurse consultant to a variety of US companies such as HP, Intel, Levi Strauss, Los Alamos Labs, and WaferTech. Melody has been a co-­investigator with Dr. Denise Smart on the Early Return to Work Project for the State of Washington, SHIP Grant sponsored by Labor and Industries.

As a nurse practitioner she has listened to thousands of stories over her career. She believes everyone has a story to tell. Her recent research work has been focused on educational innovations by using the Digital Storytelling (DS) assignment in her advanced physical assessment course as a way to promote reflective practitioners. The DS assignment has been well received and students discovered new insights about themselves and others. She strongly feels these are important confidence building skills for the future primary care providers.

Accreditation

This educational activity will provide 7.0 contact hours to learners who complete the Criteria of Successful Completion.

Acute Care Education (PA-48/Nov/20) is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Washington State Nurses Association Continuing Nursing Education Approver (A-CNE), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Registration includes:  Attendance at program, downloadable program handouts, all day coffee, tea, water, continental breakfast and snacks.  Wi-fi is available in the conference center.
