Program Description

Environmental Emergencies are in every area of clinical nursing practice. Hypothermia, hyperthermia, near-drownings, spider bites, and ingestions of toxic substances are not isolated to an emergency room environment. All healthcare practitioners should gain skills in prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and management of common environmental emergencies. Through case studies, this class will give you the skills needed to manage a variety of environmental emergencies in clinical practice.

Who Should Attend?  Advanced practice nurses, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, students, prehospital care teams, and other health sciences professionals.

Desired Learning Outcome:  Learners will practice skills needed to manage a variety of environmental emergencies.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify the signs, symptoms, and treatment of hypothermic and hyperthermic emergencies  
  • Identify and treat various kinds of bites  
  • Discuss the pathophysiology of near drownings and the progression of changes throughout the course of recovery 
  • Explore a variety of symptoms associated with poisonings, overdose, and toxidrome 
  • Identify where to find resources to manage all of these environmental emergencies in the practice setting

Karen M. Charlton, BSN, RN

Karen has a variety of nursing experience in her 14 years as a registered nurse – from medical surgical floors, to level one trauma intensive care unit experience, to teaching medical topics in third world countries, to flying in the friendly skies as a flight nurse. She has specialized in critical care, emergency medicine, and neurosciences. She is a Certified Emergency Nurse, Certified Flight Registered Nurse, Critical Care Registered Nurse and Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse. She is an active member of Medical Teams International: Volunteer & Disaster Response Team, Partners: Emergency Medicine Teaching and Seattle King County Disaster Team with recent missions to Kenya/Somalia, Cambodia, Nicaragua, Myanmar and Haiti as a care provider and/or an EMS educator. She currently works at Life Flight Network as a Flight Nurse in the Pacific Northwest. 


This educational activity will provide 6.0 contact hours (including 0.0 pharmacology hours) to learners who complete the Criteria of Successful Completion.

Acute Care Education is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Washington State Nurses Association Continuing Nursing Education Approver (A-CNE), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Registration includes:  Attendance at program, downloadable program handouts, all day coffee, tea, water, and snacks.  All supplies are included. Wi-fi is available in the conference center.
