Preceptor programs: What Does A New Grad Really Need To Know?

Description

While it is tempting to answer this question with "everything," it does little to guide the preceptor - orientee relationship. This one-hour program addresses the learning needs of nurses new to the critical care environment. Participants will be challenged to 'think like a new nurse' and critically examine the role of the preceptor and the content that they present.

Objectives

Upon completion of Preceptor Programs: What Does A New Grad Really Need To Know? The learner will:

  • Review the novice to expert continuum
  • Summarize the preparation and experience typical of a nursing graduate
  • Identify gaps in clinical knowledge typical of the nursing graduate
  • Prioritize learning objectives typical in critical care preceptor programs
  • Develop an understanding of ordering and organizing learning content
  • Appreciate the role of experience in acquisition of nursing knowledge

Course Outline

  • Review of novice to expert theory with application examples
  • Overview of nursing content curriculum in associate and baccalaureate degree programs
  • Summary of knowledge gaps typical of the new graduate focusing on system and communication issues
  • Analyzing the congruency of these system and communication gaps with learning objectives in critical care preceptor programs
  • Review of learning objective development and basic education theory
