Preceptor programs: Common Learning Problems And How To Overcome Them

Nearly everyone who has ever precepted a new nurse in the critical care environment has some war stories to tell. While some issues are obvious, others are much more subtle. During this one-hour program, participants will learn new skills for identifying common learning challenges and strategies to confront them head-on.

Objectives

Upon completion of Preceptor Programs: Common Learning Problems And How To Overcome Them the learner will:

  • Identify the key differences between preceptors, coaches, and mentors
  • Diagnose learning issues common to nurses new to the critical care environment
  • Become familiar with interventions aimed at correcting learning issues common to nurses new to the critical care environment
  • Explore issues surrounding delivering and receiving performance evaluation

Course Outline

  • Operational definitions of preceptor, coach, and mentor
  • Identification of common learning issues and problems
  • Interventions to address common learning issues and problems
  • How to influence self-reflection in the new nurse
  • Use of discriminating evaluation criteria to measure success and objectively identify areas for improvement
