We have taken the mystery out of these topics and present them in a way that will help the learner once-and-for-all understand some of the body's most important regulatory systems.

Objectives

Upon completion of Homeostasis: Fluids, Electrolytes, Acid/Base, and Shock the learner will:

  • Analyze the pathophysiology and collaborative interventions related to fluid regulation, fluid overload, and fluid deficits
  • Discuss assessment findings and collaborative interventions indicated for the major electrolyte disorders
  • Analyze and interpret arterial blood gas results
  • Compare and contrast the clinical signs and symptoms of acid-base disorders and predict measures to restore acid-base homeostasis
  • Predict the major physiological stimuli responsible for each classification of shock and explain the pathophysiology related to each
  • Explain the promotion and maintenance of adaptation for the client in shock

Course Outline

  • Fluid movement - osmosis, hydrostasis, and oncotic forces
  • The major electrolytes
