This introductory course answers the questions that are raised when encountering hemodynamic monitoring. Why is each catheter type used? How does one set-up for catheter introduction? How should the patient be monitored? What do all those numbers mean? In Beginning Hemodynamics: Essential Skills for the Critical Care Nurse, we explore the determinants of cardiac function and provide clear information on how to interpret the data. The course provides the entry-level nurse with the core essentials they need to care for a client undergoing hemodynamic monitoring. To achieve this end the class takes advantage of a variety of learning experiences including lecture, simulation, and case study. Pre-tests and post-tests are conducted. A comprehensive outline and lecture notes are provided to each participant.

Objectives

Upon completion of Beginning Hemodynamics: Essential Skills for the Critical Care Nurse, the participant will:

  • Describe the components of cardiac output
  • Examine how cardiac output affected by cardiac function and systemic vascular resistance
  • Identify and measure a PA, PCWP, and CVP waveform
  • Solve common problems encountered in hemodynamic monitoring
  • Discuss possible treatment and medication options in restoring homeostasis
  • Demonstrate interpreting the data from a PA catheter
  • Determine when physician contact is required
  • Explain assessment and documentation criteria for a client with a PA catheter
  • Demonstrate the proper set up for PA and arterial line insertion
